WHAT IS VISION THERAPY? Vision therapy is an individualized treatment program specifically designed to improve one's visual function and performance. It is an approved treatment modality for the following conditions.
- Vergence Disorders: disorders involving use of both eyes together
- Accommodative disorders: problems with focusing
- Ocular Motility Dysfunction: disorders involving eye movements
-Amblyopia: This is commonly known as lazy eye
- Visual sensory and motor integration
All these conditions can result in inefficient visual information processing and the inability to sustain visual fucntion over time.
When one visits an optometrist they know that any eye health problems will be detected and managed with eyeglasses or contact lenses if needed. There are some conditions, however, which are best managed with vision therapy. Vision therapy complements the prescription of eyeglasses, contact lenses, and the treatment of eye disease. Optometric vision therapy is also known as visual training or orthoptics and is an established medical therapy when prescribed by an optometrist. It involves a programmed combination of office treatment an home therapy exercises. The success of vision therapy is often dependent on the compliance of the patient with his home vision therapy exercises.
The benefits of optometric vision therapy include improved visual information processing and improved abilty to sustain visual function over time. These benefits help everyone from a child in a classroom to an adult using a computer or reading a book. Common symptoms relieved through vision therapy include eyestrain, inability to concentrate when performing visual tasks, visually induced headaches, and loss of place or reversal errors while reading.
